A few weeks ago, a friend of mine asked for some advice on what my essential pieces are for remixing outfits and how to pick out pieces that will help build a remixable wardrobe. Since then, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what my strategies are to make the clothing I have go a long way. I’m a college student and so I can only afford to get a few new things per season. This means that I have to constantly look at what I already have in my closet in new ways to come up with different outfits every week.
This outfit is a good example of a few of the ways I make sure to get the most out of every piece in my closet. For starters, the black skirt, black tights, and black boots are all basics that I think everyone should have in their closet. I have worn each of these pieces countless times.
The pink blouse, on the other hand, is not a basic. It’s just a fun piece that I picked up over the summer, knowing that because it’s lightweight but has long sleeves, I would be able to make it work year round. Before I buy anything, I force myself to mentally come up with at least 4-5 different ways I could wear it on the spot. If I can easily do that, then I know it’s something that I will get a ton of use out of. I also try to make sure that it’s wearable in at least three out of the four seasons. For example, I’ve worn this top during the summer, in the fall with skinny jeans, an anorak, and an infinity scarf, and now in the winter paired with all black. I have to admit, when I first learned that pastel pink was going to be a trend this fall/winter, I was both skeptical and excited. Pink is my favorite color and I actually really like how it looks contrasted with all black for an unexpected winter outfit.
While editing photos today, I found this set that I had forgotten to post. I’m glad I stumbled across them because this outfit incorporates many of my favorite things: floral prints, lace, and infinity scarves. Any outfit combining both floral prints and lace is bound to be an automatic favorite of mine, like this one from a few summers ago. I especially love the cozy vibe my boyfriend cardigan and infinity scarf give this look. My other handmade infinity scarf gets so much wear, I knew I had to make at least a couple more this winter. Unfortunately this one turned out to be an awkward length – too long to loop only twice and too short to loop three times – but as I was fiddling around with it, somehow I turned it into this twisty loop that I actually really love. I have no idea how to recreate it, but it was cute for the time being!
Winter break and the whole holiday season just flew by so fast and I was so much busier than I anticipated, so blogging had to take a bit of a backseat for the last few weeks. I know this term is probably going to be crazy as well, but I’m looking forward to having more of a routine and setting aside more time for blogging! Anyways, I really wanted to share this outfit from when I went with my mom and grandma to see the Oregon Symphony perform with Natalie Cole a few days before Christmas. The concert was so amazing and I totally loved the excuse to get a little dressed up. A black lace dress with matching maroon tights and heels felt perfectly festive and elegant.
